Overview
Fjord Health runs 40 clinics across Norway and Sweden. Their old app had been designed around the clinics rather than the people visiting them, and many older patients phoned reception instead of using it. Over six months I designed a new app for iOS and Android with accessibility as the starting point, not a final checklist.
Results
- more appointments booked in the app
- 2.4×
- fewer calls to clinic reception
- 52%
- average rating across both app stores
- 4.8
Case study
The challenge
Patients over 65 account for four in ten visits, yet they made up less than a tenth of app bookings. Small text, a five-step sign-in and medical jargon were turning away the people who needed the app most.
The approach
We designed every screen to work at the largest system text size first, then scaled down. Sign-in moved to a single tap with the national e-ID, and appointment types were rewritten in plain language together with the clinicians.
- Ran usability sessions with 24 patients aged 19 to 87
- Designed and documented every component to meet WCAG 2.2 AA
- Prototyped video visits that still work on a slow connection in a summer cabin
The outcome
Within three months of launch, more than twice as many appointments were booked in the app, calls to reception fell by half and the app climbed to a 4.8 rating in both stores.
